Message events question

I’m trying out message events for the first time and am struggling to understand how it works and am starting to doubt that I even understand what it is for.

For instance:
The transition from Artboard 1 to 2 launches a modal (which is a component). Inside the modal I have a cancel button. Can I point the cancel button to the parent Artboard 1 in order to close the modal and return to the starting point?

Yep, just drag an event from the cancel button to the “send to parent” button in the top left of the canvas

Yeah that is what I did but nothing happens. I will continue to play with it to see if I can figure out what is going wrong. Worst case I will just wait for the tutorial. thanks
